Contact Lenses
For patients desiring contact lenses, we carry a large fitting set and many times are able to send new trial lenses home the same day as the patient's routine eye exam. Our office fits daily wear, extended wear, toric, spherical, tinted, gas permeable and bifocal contact lenses.
There has been much advancement in contact lens materials in the past year allowing the availability of improved comfort lenses for clients with dry eyes, and improved vision for clients with astigmatism, difficulty reading and diseases like kerataconus. |
The types of contact lenses available are:
Soft Contact Lenses- a soft, plastic that is flexible and allows oxygen to pass through to the cornea. They can be easier to adjust to and more comfortable than rigid gas permeable lenses. Silicone-hydrogels provide more oxygen to your eye while you wear your lenses.
Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses- are a rigid, plastic that is less flexible than a soft lens. It takes a little longer to adjust to wearing these but they also tend to last longer. They can give sharper vision to those with large astigmatism.
Extended Wear Lenses - are able to be worn for an extended period of time, some lenses up to a month at a time. They should allow more oxygen to get through to the eye. More risks and complications can occur with extended wear so a proper fit and type of lens is needed from a professional, to reduce complications. Following each schedule of removal, lenses need to be left out overnight to give the eyes a rest.
Disposable (Replacement Schedule) Contact Lenses- Most of soft contact lens wearers are prescribed some type of frequent replacement schedule. "Disposable," as defined by the FDA, means used once and discarded. a)A true daily wear disposable schedule, utilizes a brand new pair of lenses each day. This is good for people who may have a tendency for protein buildup on their lenses. b)Others are a frequent/planned replacement lens. This may be a lens that is removed nightly and thrown away monthly or every two weeks. c) An extended wear lens may be worn continuously for the prescribed wearing period (which could be, 7 days to 30 days) and then thrown away. Whenever you remove your lenses, always make sure to clean and disinfect them, with the lens care system your professional has recommended before storing or before reinserting.
Tinted Lenses- are a soft contact lens that is made to change the color/appearance of the eye. Some of these will be available in Plano(no power) and also with correction. There are Halloween themed lenses that give a very theatrical look to the eyes Even though some tinted lenses don't correct vision they will still need a prescription from a professional as they are regulated by the FDA. If you desire a Halloween themed lens it will require a fitting and evaluation so be sure to plan appropriately in order to have your lenses here for the special event.
